HML
Truculent was the first class of landship
to be accepted by Her Majesty's government.
Adopted in 1888, the landships saw action
in the Oenotrian war in 1889.
Originally,
Truculent was conceived of as fulfilling
the same role on land as the battleship fulfilled
at sea, dominating the battlefield and rendering
obsolete all the other branches of the army.
Its slow speed, its proneness to breakdowns
and its relatively thin armor saw its role evolve
into that of assault gun, supporting infantry and
serving as a mobile fortification.
A
350-hp forced-draught steam engine propels the
landship at a breathtaking 11 miles per hour over
graded roads, and a more sedate 5½ miles per hour
cross-country. Boilerplate armor 1" thick
protects the crew from shrapnel and small arms
fire.
Large overhead hatches are usually left
open to alleviate some of the heat generated by
the engines, being closed only when action is
imminent. Up to eight troops can ride atop
the vehicle or on its running boards. |
