The Gold Standard

Price conversions throughout these pages are based upon the "gold standard" introduced by GDW in MegaTraveller's Hard Times.  The chart below is reproduced from that work:

Coin Cr Mass
Copper 0.2 50 grams
Silver 10 30 grams
Gold 300 30 grams

From this table, we can derive the following values:

Coin Grams/cm³ Value/gram Mass/Cr Coin Volume (cm³) Volume/Cr (cm³)
Copper 8.92 0.004 250 5.61 28
Silver 10.49 0.33 3 2.86 0.29
Gold 19.30 10 0.1 1.55 0.005

Other Precious Metals

The price of other precious metals and of gems can be determined based upon the price of gold nowadays compared with the price of the other materials nowadays.

Metal Grams/cm³ Value/gram
Palladium 12.02 5
Platinum 21.45 20

Gems

Gems are measured in carats, with each carat equaling 0.2 grams.  Gem prices can vary widely, depending upon quality, cut and clarity.  For this reason, gems are given a range of values.

Gem Carats/cm³ (grams/cm³) Value/carat
Diamond 17.5 (3.5) §5,000 to §25,000
Emerald 13.5 (2.7) §1,000 to §2,000
Ruby 20 (4.0) §1,000 to §5,000
Sapphire 20 (4.0) §100 to §500
