This is a rough outline of the economy of the Oenotrian Empire using GDW's World Tamer's Handbook.

This article uses the following assumptions:

  • The tech level of the Oenotrian Empire is 2 (~AD1600).

  • The urban population would be devoted to industrial pursuits.

  • The canal hex population would be devoted to agricultural pursuits.

  • The non-canal hex population would be devoted to raw material production.

  • Hexes containing cities would be counted as canal hexes for determining the number of agricultural towns and villages.

Urban Population:

Adding up the total number of infantry companies in each city and dividing by two gives us the population number for that city.  Multiplying this by 10,000 gives us the urban population of the Oenotrian Empire:

City Canals Companies Population
Astrapsk 7 20 100,000
Crocea 4 24 120,000
Deltoton 4 24 120,000
Iapygia 3 20 100,000
Oenotria 5 32 160,000
Skorosia 2 24 120,000
Total 144 720,000

For simplicity, we'll divide the urban population into thirds, with one third devoted to light industry, one third devoted to heavy industry and one third devoted to construction.  This gives us 240,000 in each of the sectors.

The urban population requires 290,880 tonnes of raw materials and 720,000 rations per month.  In turn it generates §72 million per month.  Since the pound sterling works out to roughly §75, this gives us a monthly output of £960,000.

More on this later, though.

Non-Urban Population:

There are 64 20-km (12.5-mile) hexes in every 100-mile hex.  As each 20-km hex has 350 square kilometers of land, a 100-mile hex has 19,250 square kilometers of land.

Grand Canal Hex in Old Seabed:

  • 1D6 towns along canal.
  • 3D6 villages scattered throughout hex.
  • There are an average of 4 towns along the canal.
  • There are an average of 11 villages throughout hex.

Non-canal Hex in Old Seabed:

  • 1D6 villages scattered throughout hex.

  • There are an average of 4 villages scattered throughout the hex.

  • Each town has an average population of 3500.

  • Each village has an average population of 700.

  • Each Grand Canal Hex in the old seabed has a population of 21,700.

  • Each Non-canal Hex in the old seabed has a population of 2800.

There are at least 57 canal hexes in the Oenotrian Empire.  The number may be a bit larger, so we'll round to 60.

The best estimate, based upon the number of hexes appearing on the SGOM, is that there are at least 160 non-canal hexes.

Based upon these figures, the non-urban population of the Oenotrian Empire is approximately 1,750,000 (1,302,000 devoted to agriculture and 448,000 devoted to raw material production).

The agricultural sector produces 5,208,000 rations per month and the raw material sector produces 1,344,000 tonnes of raw materials per month.  We'll assume that these are transported to the cities via canal, so we won't worry about roads and animal transportation.

The Armed Forces:

Using the guidelines from Martian War Bands and Soldier's Companion, the Oenotrian Army is determined to have the following units:

Infantry Companies Troops
Elite 6 720
Veteran 33 3960
Experienced 41 4920
Trained 54 6480
Green 10 1200
Total 144 17,280

Mercenary Infantry Companies Troops
Elite 1 120
Veteran 13 1560
Experienced 6 720
Trained 6 720
Total 26 3,120

Cavalry Flights Squadrons Troops
Elite 1 2 240
Veteran 8 16 1920
Experienced 10 21 2520
Trained 13 30 3600
Green 2 4 480
Total 34* 73 8760

Mercenary Cavalry Flights Squadrons Troops
Elite 1 120
Veteran 13 1560
Experienced 6 720
Trained 6 720
Total 26 3,120

Artillery** Guns Troops
Light Gun 76 1216
Heavy Gun 152 2888
Rod Gun 46 782
Rogue Gun 64 1344
Lob Gun 66 1650
Total 404 7,880
Totals 40,160

* The write-up mentions 35 flights of cavalry, but only 34 are listed in the matrix.  Each flight has two squadrons with the exception of Skorosia, whose cavalry has three squadrons per flight.

** As each gun in Soldier's Companion represents two actual guns, this number is double the number of guns listed in that reference.

This force requires 52,040 rations per month (infantry and artillery require one ration per man, and cavalry requires one ration per man and one ration per animal).

The industrial output of the urban population is sufficient to maintain and resupply the armed forces.

Conclusions

  • The Oenotrian Empire has a population of ~2.5 million.

  • It consumes ~2.5 million rations per month and produces ~5 million rations during this time.  This gives us a standard of nutrition of approximately 2 (a +1 on political roles in WTH).

  • It requires §12.35 million per month and produces §24 million per month in consumer goods (a +1 on political roles).

  • All in all, the Oenotrian Empire is stable politically and is something of an economic powerhouse.
