The Lebel Model
1886 rifle (French official designation: Fusil
Modèle 1886-M93) is an 8mm bolt action rifle which
entered service in the French Army in April 1887. It
has the distinction of being the first military
rifle specifically designed to use smokeless
gunpowder, a substance invented by Paul Vieille in
1884. The Lebel was also first to introduce a
boat-tailed bullet ("Balle D") as standard military
ammunition (1901). The Lebel rifle remained in
service in the French Army until World War II,
although the shape of its rimmed bottle necked
ammunition had long become obsolete . |
