Martian Fougasse

Description

Martian society was moribund and stagnant until the arrival of humans from Earth.  As Tellurian powers grabbed up huge chunks of territory in bids for Martian colonies, many Martian city states fought back.  Ancient treatise on weapons and warfare were dusted off, and many ancient weapons were adapted to available technology.

One of these weapons was an early directional mine, or as the Tellurians named this infernal device, Martian fougasse.  It consisted simply of a small open can mounted on a tripod and packed with black powder and musket balls.  Waxed paper protected the open end.  A percussion trigger, adapted from imported Tellurian technology, was used to fire the weapon from a distance via a cord.

The weapon became popular for the defense of strong points and for the ambush of enemy patrols.  By the turn of the century Martian fougasse had become standard issue in many Martian armies.
