Description
Carrion crawlers
strongly resemble a cross between a giant green
cutworm and a huge cephalopod. They are usually
found only in subterranean areas, such as sewers.
The carrion crawler is, as its name implies, a
scavenger, but this does not preclude aggressive
attacks upon living creatures, for that insures a
constant supply of corpses upon which to feed or for
deposit of eggs. The head of the monster is well
protected (3½), but its body is only AV (½). A
carrion crawler moves quite rapidly on its multiple
legs despite its bulk, and a wall or ceiling is as
easily-travelled as a floor, for each of the beast's
feet are equipped with sharp claws which hold it
fast. The head is equipped with eight tentacles
which flail at prey; each 60 cm long tentacle exudes
a gummy secretion which when fresh, will paralyze
opponents. Unlike most tentacle-type attacks, the
carrion crawler does not seek to control its
opponent with a grapple attack, rather each tentacle
hit causes two points of paralysis damage to the
area affected. This damage accumulates each round
until the hit location reaches zero. The poison then
spreads to the adjacent area. Once the poison
reaches the chest, and the chest reaches zero, the
victim is no longer able to breathe without
assistance and will die within 2D6 turns without
medical attention. As there are so many tentacles
with which to hit (1D6 per turn), and thus multiple
chances of being paralyzed, these monsters are
greatly feared. |
