Description
The grumble
beast is one of the most common domesticated animals
in the multiverse. It stands about two meters at the
shoulder and weighs about a tonne. It resembles a
shaggy cross between a horse and a buffalo with
splayed, padded feet that allow it to negotiate just
about any terrain. The exposed skin on its face is
marbled like a lizard's. On a genetic and
physiological level the animal resembles terrestrial
organisms, though nothing resembling it has ever
been found on Earth. The animal gets its name from
the sound of its digestive tract.
In the wild, grumble beasts form small herds
with a dominant bull, a dozen or more cows, and several calves in
various stages of growth. As bulls reach breeding age (about two
standard years) the dominant bull drives them out of the herd. Young
bulls have been known to form their own, all male, herds for
protection until they can acquire a harem of their own. In the wild
the grumble beast is extremely territorial. In captivity the animals
are docile and tractable. While relatively stupid, they cannot be
forced to endanger themselves and will nip at anyone who tries to do
so. The nip of a grumble beast can remove large chunks of flesh.
Grumble beasts are used as pack, riding and
food animals. Note:
A number of biologists believe this animal is a descendent of the
dinosaurs from an alternate reality wherein they never became
extinct. |
