Dark Æther

Space 1889

Though the term "Scaleyville" is applied to just about any concentration of Lizard-men on Earth or Mars, the original Scaleyville is a small village in the Louisiana swamps north of New Orleans.

Lizard-men began immigrating to Earth in the 1890s, drawn by the promise of good employment and a better life for their offspring.  Their actual reception was, at best, mixed.  Many were relegated to ghettos in the major cities.  A few travelled to the Southern United States where the climate was better suited for them, but where attitudes toward them were openly hostile.  Eventually, a number took up residence in New Orleans — a town noted for its progressive racial attitudes — where they eked out a living hunting and fishing.

However, even New Orleans wasn't nearly as welcoming as the newcomers had hoped.  A number of lizard-man families moved north of the city into the swamps founding the settlement that eventually became Scaleyville.

About 40 lizard-man families (about 200 individuals) inhabit the ramshackle shacks that make up Scaleyville.  A few humans also live in the area and serve as go-betweens for the village with the outside world.  There is a small schoolhouse, a general store and a bait-and-tackle shop in town.  In addition, there is a small boatyard and a sawmill on the outskirts of town.  As the lizard-men are cold-blooded and grow lethargic in the winter, one feature of each building is either an over-sized stove or a large fireplace.

One of the hovels on the edge of town houses the local medicine-woman — a powerful Mystic.  Recently she has been adopted into The Daughters of Isis as their first non-human member.  As a result, "incidents" against the lizard-man community have decreased dramatically.

Plot Hooks
  • A giant crocodile has escaped from a game plantation and has begun to prey upon fishermen and river boats.  The locals blame the lizard-men for introducing the animal and have stepped up attacks against individual lizard-men found outside Scaleyville.  An unknown patron hires the PCs to kill or capture the crocodile and to determine its origin.

  • Cultists have begun kidnapping women and children (both human and lizard-man) to sacrifice in their depraved rites.  The local sheriff refuses to do anything about it.  The PCs are hired to track down the cultists, kill them, and free any captives.  The patron is insistent the cultists must be completely eliminated.
