In the 1920s and 30s the American writer, H.P.
Lovecraft, wrote a number of horror stories with a somewhat
consistent background that included ancient alien races and the
threat of their return to reclaim the Earth as their own. The
races in many cases were so alien that the simple knowledge of their
existence could drive men to insanity.
Other writers took up the mantle of the Cthulhu
Mythos as it came to be known, adding in additional, sometimes
supernatural, elements. They Mythos thus includes horror,
fantasy and science fiction elements.
